On the evening of May 16, 2015, 25-year-old Terrell Quantrev Smith was walking on West Dixie Street in Florence, South Carolina, around 8:30 p.m. when he was shot. He was taken to a nearby hospital and died later that night; the Florence County Coroner confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound. Smith was born April 12, 1989, and lived in Florence.

Initial investigators reported two suspects fled the scene after the shooting and the Florence Police Department and the Florence County Coroner’s Office appealed to the public for information. Authorities later identified 22-year-old Zafir Abdul Bethea as a suspect in Smith’s killing; court records assert Bethea shot Smith. Bethea ultimately pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the 2015 killing and received a 30-year prison sentence as part of a resolution that included admitting guilt in another Florence County killing.
