Amanda J. Smith, 31, was shot and killed in her Aiken, South Carolina home in the early hours of April 7, 2015. A 911 call reporting a shooting at her Crossroads Park Drive residence came in at about 12:24 AM. Deputies found Amanda with a gunshot wound to her stomach; she was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead at 1:18 AM. She was a mother of three daughters and had lived in Aiken for eight years, working as a waitress.
Investigators focused on 32-year-old Steven Thurmond of Aiken, the father of two of Amanda’s children. Authorities said the shooting resulted from Thurmond’s careless handling of a firearm; he was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Thurmond’s record included at least 19 arrests in the prior decade, with prior charges such as criminal domestic violence, assault and battery, unlawful carrying of a pistol, and possession of a stolen pistol. The manslaughter count was described as involuntary, indicating officials viewed the death as the result of negligence rather than a premeditated act.
Did anyone in Aiken know Amanda or her family and have information that could add context to what happened that night?
