Walter Lamar Scott was 50 when a traffic stop in North Charleston, South Carolina, on April 4, 2015, ended in his death. He was driving a 1991 Mercedes and was stopped for a non-functioning brake light. After Scott exited his car and ran, Officer Michael Slager pursued him; a Taser was deployed and Scott was struck, got up, and fled. A bystander’s cellphone video showed Slager firing eight rounds at the unarmed, fleeing Scott, hitting him five times in the back, buttocks, and ear. A forensic pathologist identified the fatal wound as a bullet entering Scott’s back and striking his heart and lungs. The video also appeared to show Slager dropping an object later identified as his Taser near Scott’s body.

The bystander footage prompted Slager’s arrest on April 7, 2015, and his firing by the department. State murder charges went to trial in late 2016 but ended in a mistrial after jurors deadlocked. Slager later pleaded guilty in federal court to a civil rights charge of using excessive force; a federal judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison on December 7, 2017, and the Scott family received a $6.5 million settlement from the city. Does anyone have additional details about the scene behind the pawn shop or the bystander who recorded the video?
