Keith Anthony Broome was a 27-year-old Black man from Mullins, South Carolina, who died on New Year’s Day 2015 after being struck by a single gunshot to the head inside a crowded nightclub called The Living Room on West Laurel Street. Born April 8, 1987 in the Bronx, he had moved south as a child, trained in welding at Denmark Technical College and continued studies at Florence-Darlington Technical College. Family and friends remembered him as a devoted son and father working to build a skilled trade and a future for himself.
Police say about 5:45 a.m. responders found Keith after gunfire in a room reported to hold several dozen up to 80 people. Investigators later identified the weapon as a .380-caliber pistol. A 28-year-old Mullins man named Henry Sherman was identified as the suspect, phoned police the next morning, turned himself in and was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime; bond was denied at the initial hearing. The Living Room faced legal action and a temporary injunction to close after prosecutors cited multiple shootings there since 2013.
Does anyone who knew Keith or was at the club that night have information that could help clarify what happened?
