Charlie Mardy Jackson Jr., a 23-year-old father from Spartanburg, South Carolina, was shot and killed on November 23, 2014, outside Universal Events, a nightclub on Southport Road near Spartanburg Downtown Airport. A dispute inside the club between Jackson’s group and another group from Cherokee County led security to eject those involved. The confrontation continued in the parking lot as Jackson walked to his vehicle; a dark blue Chevrolet pickup pulled up, words were exchanged, Jackson reportedly tossed a bottle at the truck, and the driver fired through the window, striking Jackson in the chest. The pickup fled and Jackson later died of his wounds.

Investigators used club photographs and witness descriptions to identify the vehicle and its occupants. A regional alert led Gaffney officers to stop the truck the same morning and take two men into custody. Forensic testing showed gunshot residue on one man, later identified as 32-year-old Shedrick Andre Savage. Savage was tried in November 2016, convicted of murder after a two-day trial and sentenced by Circuit Judge Roger Couch to 30 years; he had prior convictions including drug offenses and possession of a firearm by a felon.
