A long-standing dispute in Liberty, South Carolina, ended in deadly violence on October 10, 2014. Police were called to the Forestview Apartments after reports of a shooting; by the time officers arrived civilians were rendering aid to three men with gunshot wounds in the parking lot and on a sidewalk. Twenty-two-year-old Houston Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene. His uncle, 42-year-old Steven Chapman, was taken to a hospital and later died of his injuries.

Investigators say the feud had been simmering for months between Houston Chapman and 32-year-old Benjamin James Pilgrim, who lived in the same complex and was engaged to a Chapman family member. Arrest warrants allege Pilgrim went to the apartment armed with a pistol and shot Houston multiple times. Officials determined Houston returned fire and that Steven was struck during the exchange. Pilgrim suffered non-life-threatening wounds and was airlifted for treatment; after release from a rehabilitation center he was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

What details about the dispute or the events that afternoon might help explain how this confrontation escalated to such a deadly outcome?
