On May 24, 2014, 21-year-old Devonte Dantzler of Summerville was killed in a burst of gunfire at the Bermuda Sands Motel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. during Atlantic Beach BikeFest and followed a large fight that witnesses say broke out on the sidewalk in front of the motel. Dantzler and 28-year-old Jamie Williams of Ladson were pronounced dead at the scene; 22-year-old Sandy Gaddis Barnwell of Summerville died later at a hospital. A fourth person, Keith Williams, was wounded.

Myrtle Beach police and the Summerville Police Department investigated as part of a violent Memorial Day weekend that included eight separate shootings. Despite an intensive investigation and public appeals, no suspect was ever publicly named in the triple homicide and the case later grew cold. The motive is believed to be connected to the earlier street brawl, but the full circumstances remain unresolved.
