Mariann O’Shields, 55, was shot and killed on April 30, 2014, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, after walking her daughter to a school bus stop. For about six weeks before the killing she had been staying at a domestic violence shelter, the Safe Homes Crisis Center, to avoid escalating threats from her estranged husband. A protective court order had limited his contact to text messages about custody, and Mariann reported a violation to the sheriff’s office the day before the shooting.

On the morning of April 30 a van pulled up beside her and several shots were fired. A witness called for help; Mariann was taken to a hospital and died during surgery about two hours later. Robert O’Shields Sr. was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and violation of an order of protection.

Those who knew Mariann or have information about her movements that morning are asked to come forward.
