David Nelson Hammer Jr. was 21 when he was shot and killed on Saturday, March 22, 2014, in the driveway of a residence on Fort Mill Highway in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The other person involved was 57-year-old Douglas Jowers of Indian Land, who fired a single fatal shot during an encounter with Hammer.
Jowers said he feared for his life, described Hammer as behaving aggressively and appearing intoxicated, and noted that he felt vulnerable after a recent surgery. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and the 6th Circuit Solicitor’s Office reviewed the case and concluded Jowers’ actions were justified under South Carolina’s Stand Your Ground law; no charges were filed. Jowers expressed his sympathies to Hammer’s family after the decision.
Are there details about the confrontation or witnesses that anyone in the area can share?
