On January 31, 2014, 19-year-old Marquail Hellams was found dead on a gravel path in Piedmont, South Carolina, having been shot multiple times. Investigators linked the killing to prior conflicts between Hellams and two roommates, Destany Fields and Rahiem Griffin. Reports say Hellams believed he was joining a narcotics purchase when he got into a vehicle with Fields, Griffin and Kris Thomas Capatino.
The case remained cold for seven years. In April 2021 a tip to CrimeStoppers and new forensic testing described as touch DNA led investigators to a vehicle in Pickens County allegedly used during the crime. Arrests followed: Kris Thomas Capatino, Destany Maria Fields and Rahiem Jarrard Griffin were charged with murder and criminal conspiracy; Griffin was additionally charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime. All three were held without bond at the Greenville County Detention Center.
What details about Hellams or that day might someone from Piedmont remember that could help clarify what happened?
