Michael Jerome Rogers, 46, was killed on January 27, 2014, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, after a dispute over a drug sale. The seller, Antwuan Levon Nelson, then 29, went to Rogers’ home intending to sell drugs. When Rogers declined to buy, a physical fight followed. Nelson left briefly, returned armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, lay in wait, and fired three shots when Rogers stepped outside; one shot was fatal.

The Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler participated in the subsequent investigation and law enforcement agencies worked together to reconstruct the sequence of events. Nelson was arrested, charged, and later convicted of manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, receiving a combined sentence of 30 years in prison.
