Brandon Robinson was 20 and a junior at South Carolina State University when he was killed on January 24, 2014. A student and member of the football team who played outside linebacker and defensive end, Robinson was involved in an argument outside the Hugine Suites dormitory that afternoon. The dispute escalated when another student, 19-year-old Justin Bernard Singleton, produced a gun and shot Robinson in the neck. Robinson was taken to a nearby hospital and died of his injuries.

Campus authorities briefly locked down the university while police searched for suspects; officers initially reported looking for four people who fled campus but located Singleton early the next morning at an Orangeburg apartment complex and took him into custody. He was charged in connection with Robinson’s death.

Later court action resolved the criminal and civil responses: Singleton pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received a 25-year prison sentence. Robinson’s estate also filed a wrongful death lawsuit accusing the university of inadequate security and alleging knowledge of Singleton’s violent history; that case was settled with a financial payout from the university and two related entities. Does anyone with ties to South Carolina State from that time have additional details about campus safety or the events that day?
