Jamaal Antron Aiken, 31, was shot and killed late on November 14, 2013, after a dispute in the parking lot of a small, privately run nightclub off Seaboard Avenue in Greenwood, South Carolina. Officers arriving after 10:30 p.m. found Aiken wounded on the pavement; he was taken to Self Regional Healthcare and pronounced dead just before 12:30 a.m. on November 15. Investigators said at least one argument in the lot preceded the shooting, but they could not immediately explain what started the dispute or why it turned deadly.
Police stopped a vehicle about half a mile away on Reynolds Avenue that night and arrested Alphonso Morgan Jr., whom they publicly identified as a suspect. Morgan was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and was booked into the Greenwood Detention Center. The case produced years of litigation, including a denied claim of immunity under the state Protection of Persons and Property Act and an unpublished South Carolina Court of Appeals opinion addressing the effect of Morgan’s guilty plea on that claim. Aiken is remembered in an online obituary and grave listing that names his parents, Gregory Aiken and Tracy McGrier Aiken.
Did anyone who knew Jamaal or who was near Seaboard Avenue on November 14, 2013, ever come forward with information about what sparked the parking-lot dispute?
