Sylvester Smart Jr. was 28 when he was shot to death in the Socastee area of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The fatal gunshot wound to his chest occurred on August 21, 2010. Friends and family remembered him as generous and charismatic.

The investigation prompted a large number of arrests in the weeks and months after the shooting. Reports at one point put the total arrested at fourteen, with three more taken into custody later; some of the charges included murder.
