Lieutenant Randy Gerald, 47, was killed on the evening of December 29, 2001, in Conway, South Carolina. Gerald was returning home from his shift at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center when he stopped after seeing what he believed to be a car accident. The situation proved to be a domestic dispute; while still in uniform he was identified by the male involved, who then opened fire and fatally wounded him.
The female victim in the domestic dispute escaped to safety following Gerald’s intervention. The shooter, identified as Boyd Meekins, fled but was captured about 24 hours later and charged with murder. Meekins was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Gerald had served 13 years with the Horry County Sheriff’s Office and is remembered by colleagues as having saved the woman by intervening.
Did anyone in Conway at the time remember seeing the disturbance that night or the events that followed?
