On September 15, 1997, Esther Sheryl Wood, 27, was killed during a workplace shooting at the R.E. Phelon Co. Manufacturing plant in Aiken County, South Carolina. A former employee, Hastings Arthur Wise, who had been recently terminated, returned to the plant around 3 p.m. during a shift change armed with a semiautomatic pistol and began shooting. Reports say Wise sought people he blamed for his firing or for taking jobs he wanted; Wood had recently been promoted into a quality control position that Wise coveted.

Wood was shot in the back and leg while trying to flee, then shot in the head at close range in what prosecutors described as execution-style. Three other employees were killed and three more wounded before Wise was taken into custody after attempting to poison himself with insecticide and being found by a SWAT team.
