Sergeant Thomas Clyde Harrison Jr. was 38 when he was killed while on duty at Prince of Orange Mall in Orangeburg, South Carolina. On January 15, 1993, Harrison was at the Belk department store following up on a lead about three people suspected of passing forged checks. As he questioned one man about his identity, that man produced a handgun. A ricocheted round struck the floor before a bullet hit Sergeant Harrison in the abdomen; the assailant then fired five more shots at point-blank range, killing him in the store.

Harrison had served about a decade with the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety and is survived by his wife, son, and parents. The community was deeply affected by the killing of a veteran officer in a public place. If anyone has information about Sergeant Harrison, his activities that day, or the people he was investigating, please come forward.
