Deputy Sheriff Christopher Lee Taylor, 21, was killed in the line of duty on the evening of December 7, 1992, in Anderson, South Carolina. A recent graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and a member of the sheriff’s office dive team, he had been with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office less than a year. While investigating a bug exterminator truck dragging a hose on SC State 24, he discovered the vehicle was stolen and had placed two juveniles in his patrol car to keep them warm. When he returned to the patrol car one of the juveniles shot him in the head, a fatal wound.

The two juveniles were captured three days later. The shooter was convicted of murder and originally sentenced to death; after a new trial the sentence was changed to life without parole. The accomplice received a 30-year prison term. Deputy Taylor was survived by his expectant wife, his parents and a brother; his son was born in June following the killing. The South Carolina General Assembly adopted a concurrent resolution expressing sorrow at his death.
