Charles Edward Minnick Jr., 31, was one of three employees killed in a workplace shooting at Columbia Machine in Smithsburg, Maryland, on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

The shooter, identified as 23-year-old Joe Louis Esquivel of Hedgesville, West Virginia, reportedly left the scene by vehicle and exchanged gunfire with Maryland State Police. A trooper was wounded and Esquivel was also wounded before being taken into custody. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Esquivel pleaded not criminally responsible in September 2022, and in May 2023 a Washington County Circuit Court judge ruled him not criminally responsible, citing a Maryland State Health Department report that concluded he suffered from schizophrenia and ordered his commitment to a state mental health facility.
