Michael Franklin, 41, of San Francisco, was shot and killed on December 14, 2016, at a gas station at Edes Street and 98th Avenue in East Oakland shortly after 9 p.m. He and another victim, 19-year-old Sean Banks of Oakland, were wounded during an apparent confrontation; both died soon after the shooting. The incident occurred amid a surge of violence in Oakland in 2016, a year that recorded 85 homicides and strained the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Division through resource limits and troubled community trust.
The city’s efforts at violence reduction, including Ceasefire and boosted investigative resources, had not brought down the high homicide rate that year. Police continue to investigate this shooting and are seeking information from community members.
If anyone has information about that night at the Edes Street gas station, please come forward to investigators.
