On March 10, 2022, James Brian Thompson, 55, was shot to death during what police described as a home invasion at a residence on Oregon Way in Lexington Park, Maryland. Deputies arrived at 9:27 p.m. after reports of a shooting and found Thompson inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene despite first responders’ efforts.

Court documents and witness statements say the incident began outside the house, when Thompson’s son was accosted while sitting in a vehicle by three armed men wearing all-black clothing and ski masks. One of the men displayed a firearm and forced the son into the home, where the encounter escalated and Thompson was shot. The son later identified one suspect as 19-year-old Rylan John Somerville of Lexington Park.

Investigators arrested 43-year-old Lakisha Rena Rhodes on March 18, 2022, in connection with the murder and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek information from anyone who may have seen or heard anything that night.
