On the night of July 23, 2021, 26-year-old Errol N. Davis of Woodlawn was found fatally shot inside his vehicle in the 6900 block of Brookmill Road in Pikesville, near the Baltimore City line. First responders arrived just before midnight; the vehicle had stopped on a sidewalk and an embankment. Davis had sustained a single gunshot wound to the back of his head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Baltimore County Police investigators treated the killing as a targeted attack rather than a random act. Another man, Antwoine West, was with Davis during the incident and suffered a first-degree assault. The case later produced an arrest and a trial: Deon Sheridan Smith, Jr. was tried in Baltimore County Circuit Court and the jury convicted him of first-degree felony murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence; life plus concurrent terms were imposed. An appeal was noted in March 2025.
