Curtis Mason Smith was 19 when his body was found on March 20, 2021, inside his own car left near an abandoned barn in a remote area of Frederick, Maryland. His family had reported him missing on March 19, and an investigation determined he died of a gunshot wound.

Authorities quickly focused on a former classmate, 19-year-old Joshua David Eckenrode. Charging documents say the two arranged to meet on March 19 for a firearm transaction at Eckenrode’s residence, where Smith was fatally shot. Prosecutors allege Eckenrode placed Smith’s body in Smith’s Honda Accord and drove it to the abandoned property where it was discovered by a family.

Searches of Eckenrode’s residences reportedly turned up assembled explosive devices, bomb-making materials and notes suggesting plans for a mass casualty event. Smith’s father, Zachary Smith, said his son may have been killed for refusing to participate. No confirmed motive beyond the charging documents is known.

Did anyone in Frederick recognize either young man or have information about the planned meeting on March 19, 2021?
