On January 21, 2021, police in Waldorf, Maryland, answered a report of gunshots and an open townhouse door on Hanover Court and found the bodies of 24-year-old Kandeon Meisha Niravanh and her 22-year-old housemate, Genesis Garrett. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.

Investigators quickly focused on a suspect known to the victims. Authorities arrested 49-year-old Deon Watkins in Washington, D.C., on January 23, 2021, and extradited him to Maryland. Prosecutors said the killings were linked to a dispute over a drug-related debt: Watkins was Niravanh’s marijuana supplier and had exchanged threatening text messages with her after believing she was trying to deal directly with his supplier. Surveillance footage shown at trial was described as depicting a vehicle matching Watkins leaving the scene after the shootings.

A Charles County jury convicted Watkins in August 2023 of two counts of first-degree murder and related charges. What details about the victims’ lives or movements that night might help anyone who knew them come forward with further information?
