On July 27, 2019, just before 12:30 a.m., Baltimore County Police responded to the 1000 block of Foxcroft Lane in Essex for reports of a shooting. Officers found three people with gunshot wounds. Dennis Christopher Vasquez, 34, of Parkville, was one of two men who died that night; the other fatality was 26-year-old Cameron Ross Stenhouse of Essex. A third person suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body and was taken to a hospital and expected to survive.

Investigators reported the shooting occurred during a drug transaction. Within days police arrested 24-year-old Corey Daniel Powell, who lived on the same block, and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Vasquez and Stenhouse and one count of attempted first-degree murder for the injured victim. Powell was ordered held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
