On September 12, 2018, a funeral at Mount Zion Cemetery in Lansdowne, Maryland, ended in deadly violence. Maurice Brown Jr., 32, was attending the graveside service for his 18-year-old brother Marcus, who had been killed weeks earlier. During the ceremony gunfire erupted and two men were shot.

Investigators determined Maurice Brown Jr. shot and killed 25-year-old Montrell Johnson at the funeral. Almost immediately a second, unidentified person shot and killed Maurice at the scene. Police have said the attack appears to have been targeted and have explored whether it was retaliation related to Marcus Brown’s earlier killing.
