On July 29, 1995, 61-year-old pilot Allen Morton Gelin was flying a white twin-engine Cessna 421C, tail number N800DD, from Juneau to King Salmon with passengers Richard Lindner and Mark Pickar when the aircraft reported a critical right‑engine failure about 20 miles west of Middleton Island. The flight began VFR, switched to IFR and was in solid IFR conditions when Gelin told Air Traffic Control he intended an emergency landing on Middleton Island but could not access the approach plates. Radar contact was lost soon after the distress call.

Search crews saw bubbles, an oil slick and some debris about three nautical miles south of Middleton Island Airport, but the main wreckage was not found until September 29, 1996 — and none of the three occupants were recovered from the wreck. The official investigation presumed the occupants were fatally injured, but without recovered remains the exact fate of Gelin and the others remains unconfirmed. Does anyone have information about the flight, the passengers, or the recovery efforts around Middleton Island?
