On the night of November 14, 2016, 28-year-old Karl Sellers Jr. of Cheverly, Maryland, was found with gunshot wounds in a stairwell of an apartment building in the 5000 block of 57th Avenue. Bladensburg officers responded to what was initially reported as a medical emergency at about 10:30 p.m.; Sellers was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Sellers was a father of two who worked as a bike messenger in Washington, D.C., and his family described him as outgoing with no known enemies. He had been visiting a friend at the complex just before he was shot. Prince George’s County homicide detectives canvassed the neighborhood, offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment, and appealed to the public, but investigators were unable to identify a suspect or motive.

No arrests or suspect identifications have been publicly announced, and the case is unsolved. If anyone knew Karl, saw activity near the 5000 block of 57th Avenue on November 14, 2016, or has information that could help, please come forward.
