George Barnes was 52 when he was shot inside his apartment building in the 2500 block of Southern Avenue in Temple Hills, Maryland, in the late morning of September 8, 2016. Emergency crews took him to a nearby hospital, but he died there several hours later; the case was investigated as a homicide by the Prince George’s County Police Department Homicide Unit.

Detectives reported the shooter fired just inside the apartment building and then fled. Weeks later investigators identified a suspect; on November 29, 2016, 26-year-old John Hazelwood of Southeast Washington, D.C., was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder, assault and weapons offenses. He was held at the Department of Corrections without bond as the legal process began.

What details about the morning of September 8 might help explain motive or how the suspect and victim knew each other?
