On June 24, 2016, a shooting inside a home on Orleans Avenue in District Heights, Maryland, killed 50-year-old Carlina Renee Gray. The attack also claimed the lives of 55-year-old Jan Marie Parks and 60-year-old Allen Rowlett; two other people were wounded and survived. Neighbors described the violence as shocking and left the community unsettled.
Carlina Gray’s sister remembered her as caring and generous, the family member who held them together and often offered a hot meal or a place to stay. Less than a week after the killings, on June 29, 2016, 24-year-old Lawrence Sylvester Rogers Jr. of Capitol Heights was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder in the three deaths. Investigators had not announced a motive at the time. A vigil was held where family and friends expressed relief that a suspect was in custody.
Did anyone in the community know the victims or have information about the circumstances that led to that night?
