On a Friday evening in April 2016, 37-year-old firefighter–paramedic John Ulmschneider responded to a welfare check in Temple Hills, Maryland. Ulmschneider and fellow firefighters entered a home when the occupant, identified as Darrell Lumpkin, fired several shots through the door. Ulmschneider was struck in the chest, taken to a nearby hospital, and died of his injuries. Two other people were shot: 19-year-old firefighter Kevin Swain was critically wounded and a civilian caller suffered non-serious injuries.
Lumpkin surrendered at the scene and told police he believed his home was being broken into and acted in self-defense. A grand jury declined to indict him for murder or manslaughter; he was later indicted on weapons charges tied to a prior felony, pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and received a four-year sentence, but died before serving it. An inquiry found 911 dispatchers had not relayed that guns might be in the home to the responding crew.
Ulmschneider, nicknamed Skillet, was a 13-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department and left behind a wife and young daughter. Does anyone have memories of him or information about the April 2016 welfare check that could shed more light on what happened?
