Gilbert Mike Butta Hall III, 45, was found with gunshot wounds in a wooded area behind an abandoned house on Addison Road South in Capitol Heights, Maryland, on the afternoon of January 30, 2016. First responders reached him alive, but he died after being transported to a local hospital.
Prince George’s County investigators quickly treated the shooting as nonrandom and arrested 32-year-old Markena Shanay Townsend of Upper Marlboro within days, charging her with first-degree murder and use of a handgun in a crime of violence. Prosecutors said the motive was drug-related. Townsend initially denied knowing Hall to detectives, but at trial she testified she knew him professionally through a record company and that a dispute over a video deposit escalated into a struggle in which she said she fired one shot in self-defense.
A jury convicted Townsend of first-degree murder and the handgun charge; she was sentenced to life plus twenty consecutive years. Did anyone who knew Gilbert or his work in the area notice tensions between him and others before January 30, 2016?
