In the early morning hours of May 17, 2015, 20-year-old James L. H. Skinner was shot inside a home on Bryn Mawr Avenue in Salisbury, Maryland. Skinner had been staying at the residence with a family friend and her three teenage children for about two months. Shortly after 3:30 a.m., several people entered the house; investigators reported no signs of forced entry. A confrontation followed and Skinner was found by the homeowner lying in the entrance with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead; an autopsy confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot and the manner as homicide.

Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, Salisbury Police Department and the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office identified two suspects: 20-year-old Daequan White of Salisbury and 20-year-old Shaquan Wallace of Salisbury. White was charged with first-degree murder but his trial ended in a February 2016 mistrial. Wallace admitted to a witness that he was the shooter, pleaded guilty in April 2016 to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with all but 50 years suspended, to run consecutively with a sentence he was already serving; he received no credit for time served.
