Donald G. Mariner, 72, was beaten to death in his home on Pemberton Drive in Salisbury, Maryland, on April 16, 2014. A roommate, age 50, was also attacked and survived. Mariner’s pickup truck was stolen and later found abandoned.
Authorities identified Paul A. Tatem, 35, of Quantico, and he was indicted on charges including first- and second-degree murder after an investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit. At trial the prosecution relied on DNA evidence and a witness who said Tatem sold him a television taken from Mariner’s home. Defense challenges highlighted that Tatem’s DNA was found only on the exterior of the residence while DNA belonging to his girlfriend, Angel Brown, was found inside. Testimony also differed about Mariner’s life: his daughter said he had no enemies, while the surviving roommate said Mariner often had visits from prostitutes.
The jury acquitted Tatem of all charges. No other suspects have been publicly identified and no further arrests have been reported; the murder remains unsolved. If anyone knew Donald Mariner or has information about that night, please come forward.
