Andre Morton, 51, was found fatally shot in the street in Bladensburg, Maryland, on the night of November 15, 2011, at about 11 p.m. The shooting occurred in the 700 block of Maury Avenue after Morton, who lived in the District, had been visiting his mother’s home there. Earlier that evening his van had broken down and his brother towed it away; his mother said he stepped outside frustrated and was shortly after reported shot by a neighbor.

Prince George’s County detectives had not identified suspects or a motive in the immediate aftermath. Family members suspected a robbery and described the neighborhood as frequently targeted by troubled youths. Neighbors heard the gunshots but did not see anyone flee; a gun was found the next day in a nearby yard though its connection to the killing was unclear. At the time of his death Morton was living with his father, his girlfriend, and their newborn son.
