On the night of May 30, 2011, 24-year-old Sean ONeil Ellis was found shot to death inside a parked Lexus in the 1300 block of Rollins Avenue in Capitol Heights, Maryland. His 28-year-old cousin, Anthony Stevens McKelvin, also died of gunshot wounds in the same vehicle. Police responded to reports of gunfire around 11:30 p.m., and the Lexus — owned by Ellis’s mother — was discovered at the scene.

Prosecutors later charged two men, Kenan Arnon Seif Myers, 24, and Brian Cuffie Mayhew, 19, with first-degree murder. Authorities alleged the victims had been kidnapped at gunpoint, forced to return to Ellis’s home to retrieve $1,500 and watches, then driven to a construction site near Rollins Avenue where they were killed. The bodies and the car were doused with bleach and gasoline; the vehicle was not set alight because the suspects reportedly lacked a lighter or matches.

In the trials that followed, Brian Mayhew was convicted of first-degree murder in February 2014 and sentenced to life plus 20 years. A prosecution witness, Mayhew’s uncle Nicoh Mayhew, had been murdered in December 2012; grand jury testimony from Nicoh was read at trial. Kenan Myers was acquitted after his defense highlighted an absence of physical evidence linking him to the scene. Did anyone in the Capitol Heights area see the Lexus or notice suspicious activity around Rollins Avenue that night?
