On January 6, 2011, at about 11:35 a.m. officers responded to the 900 block of Central Hill Lane in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, after reports of gunfire. They found 26-year-old Maurice Valentine of Washington, D.C., suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses described a person fleeing, which led officers to establish a perimeter and search nearby neighborhoods. A patrol officer later spotted and detained a 17-year-old from Upper Marlboro who matched the description. Police recovered a firearm at the time of the arrest, and the teenager was charged with first-degree murder and held without bond. Homicide detectives reported the shooting arose from a personal dispute between Valentine and the suspect.
