Ananya Crawford was 18 when she was fatally shot at a car wash in the 1900 block of Scenic Highway in Baton Rouge on the evening of Friday, June 30, 2017. The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m.; witnesses said a male suspect fired seven or eight shots before fleeing on foot. Crawford sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her upper torso and died at the scene. The suspect was described as wearing red pants and a white shirt.

Crawford was a young mother of a two-year-old son, who was with her aunt at the time. Family members said she worked hard, at one point holding two jobs to support her child and save for low-income housing. Motive was unknown and the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit opened an investigation; the person responsible had not been identified.
