Hugo Enrique Lopez, a 38-year-old resident of Adelphi, Maryland, was killed on April 19, 2008. His death prompted an intensive police investigation that at first produced few answers and left the community unsettled. Detectives treated the case as a violent confrontation, interviewed witnesses, and pursued multiple leads while several people were identified as persons of interest.

Investigators later developed new evidence that led to the arrest of a specific suspect. That person was charged, tried, and ultimately convicted in connection with Lopez’s death, with witness testimony and evidence presented at trial forming the prosecution’s narrative of what happened.
