Frank Doherty Jr., 44, was aboard a 21-foot Chris Craft that left Port Canaveral for a day fishing on December 20, 1987. The boat carried Captain John DeGoes, James Meulemans, his 12-year-old son Jamie, and Doherty. The group planned to return by nightfall but never did.

Captain DeGoes’s body was recovered about twelve miles off Daytona Beach on December 26, 1987; Meulemans’s body washed ashore in January 1988. No trace of Jamie Meulemans or Frank Doherty Jr. was ever found, and no boat debris or distress signal was reported despite the vessel having a radio. The circumstances that put the boat into trouble remain unexplained after extensive searches.
