On the evening of January 24, 2007, a delivery for Marlo Furniture to a home in Accokeek, Maryland, turned deadly after a dispute about a delayed furniture delivery. Brandon D. Clark, 22, and a colleague, Robert White, arrived around 7:30 p.m. to deliver replacement bed rails to the residence of Keith Washington, a Prince George’s County police corporal. Washington, armed with a handgun, shot both deliverymen during an altercation. Clark was critically wounded and died nine days later on February 2, 2007; White survived with severe injuries.
Washington was arrested and charged with a dozen offenses, including murder, attempted murder, and assault. At trial he claimed self-defense; prosecutors disputed that account. In February 2008 a jury convicted Washington of involuntary manslaughter in Clark’s death, two counts of first-degree assault, and two counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony, while acquitting him of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter. In May 2008 Washington received a 45-year prison sentence; he expressed remorse at sentencing but continued to say he did not murder Brandon Clark.
The case raised questions about escalation of consumer disputes and an on-duty officer’s use of deadly force. If anyone knew Brandon Clark or has information about the events that night, please share what can help clarify what happened.
