Special Agent William H. Christian, Jr., 49, was killed in the early morning of May 29, 1995 during an FBI stakeout in the parking lot of Greenbelt Middle School in Maryland. Christian was part of a 27-person team surveilling a fugitive, Ralph McLean, wanted in connection with a series of violent attacks on law enforcement in the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County. McLean reportedly approached Christian’s vehicle just before 1:00 a.m. and fired multiple shots through the car window, fatally wounding the agent.

A pursuit followed as other agents and officers engaged McLean. He fled to a nearby parking garage where a gun battle occurred; McLean then died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Investigators recovered two firearms from McLean, including a MAC-11 described as the weapon used to kill Agent Christian and a service weapon reportedly stolen from Prince George’s County Police Corporal John Novabilski after his murder. Christian, a 20-year FBI veteran and U.S. Army veteran, was survived by his wife and children and is honored on the FBI’s Wall of Honor.

Does anyone have information about the Greenbelt stakeout or McLean’s movements that night?
