Officer Ryan Christopher Johnson Sr. was 25 and a two-year patrolman with the Prince George’s County Police Department when he was shot in Capitol Heights, Maryland, on the evening of April 16, 1992. He was standing by his car in the 1000 block of Brooke Road after visiting a friend when a tan Oldsmobile carrying two people pulled up and what is described as a robbery attempt turned deadly. An exchange of gunfire followed; Johnson was hit multiple times in the throat, back, and thigh but managed to return fire and strike one of the assailants. He was taken to a local hospital and died six days later on April 22, 1992.

Two 17-year-olds, Harry M. Mayo III and Terrence Brown, were located and arrested within hours; one of them was treated for a gunshot wound at a Washington D.C. hospital. Johnson left behind a wife and two children.
