In the early morning hours of February 27, 2021, a dispute outside a Speedway convenience store on Maple Avenue in Elmira, New York, turned fatal. Shamal I. Gladden, 44, had arrived separately and intervened after seeing a friend’s daughter being verbally harassed. The confrontation escalated when one man produced a handgun and Gladden was shot multiple times. He was taken by private vehicle to Arnot Ogden Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Elmira Police arrived about 3:40 a.m. after reports of a shooting but found no one at the scene.
Police identified 34-year-old Khalid D. Abdul-Wahhab of Binghamton as the shooter. He was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, arraigned in Elmira City Court, and held at the Chemung County Jail. In May 2022, a jury found Abdul-Wahhab guilty of second-degree murder; he received 25 years to life plus concurrent 15-year weapon possession sentences, followed by five years of post-release supervision. His defense stated an intention to appeal.
Did anyone in Elmira know Shamal Gladden or have information about the events outside the Speedway that morning?
