Max Lilburn Stone, 42, of Lubbock, Texas, was last seen December 30, 1976, at a bar on Brownfield Highway and never returned to his apartment. All of his belongings, including his paycheck and medication, were left behind. His yellow 1973 Pontiac was recovered the next day after it had been driven by Victor Briones, who was arrested for drunk driving; Stone’s wallet and identification were found nearby.

Investigators identified Briones and another man, Felix Ybarra Jr., as the last people seen with Stone. Both were later charged with aggravated robbery in connection with Stone’s disappearance, and authorities suspected they may have killed him to steal the car. Stone’s body was never found, and no murder charges were filed. Foul play is strongly suspected but the case remains unsolved.
