On the evening of September 4, 2020, 23-year-old Andy Urena-Marrero was shot in the head while in the backyard of his Hudson Avenue home in Haverstraw, New York. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center but died of his injuries. A 20-year-old man was also wounded in the same shooting, suffering a gunshot to the leg; he was treated at Montefiore Nyack Hospital and released.

The Haverstraw Police Department opened an extensive investigation and offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Family and community members held marches wearing shirts bearing Marrero’s name and image to demand justice.
