On the evening of May 23, 2020, 27-year-old artist Duane Todman was sitting on the steps of a church in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood of Schenectady, New York, when an argument between a man and a woman broke out nearby. Todman intervened, and the man pulled a firearm and shot him in the neck at point-blank range. Todman was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect after the shooter left behind a cellphone, a driver’s license, and a debit card. Those items led police to 24-year-old Marlone Oindo, whom detectives and the U.S. Marshals Service located and arrested on June 5, 2020. Oindo was charged with second-degree murder, criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.
Later court proceedings recorded that Oindo pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter and received a 22-year prison sentence. Prosecutors said concerns about witness reluctance influenced the decision to accept a plea deal.
