Taleek R. Smith was 23 and from Hempstead, New York, when he was killed by gunfire in the early morning of April 26, 2020. Shortly after midnight, a ShotSpotter activation brought Hempstead officers to Olsen Place; at about 12:19 a.m. they found Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Later reports say he had been seated in a parked vehicle when he was shot. A Nassau County Police medic pronounced him dead at the scene and the shooting was investigated as a homicide.

Police publicly identified Smith in the days after the shooting but released few details about what led to the attack. Authorities did not announce a motive, did not publicly identify a suspect, and did not say whether Smith had been specifically targeted. The case remained unsolved more than two years later; in November 2022 officials renewed a public appeal and increased the Crime Stoppers reward to as much as $25,000 for information leading to an arrest. No arrest or prosecution has been publicly documented.

If anyone saw or heard anything around Olsen Place shortly after midnight on April 26, 2020, or has information about this killing, please come forward to Nassau County Crime Stoppers.
