Seventeen-year-old Johni Slim Dunia was found fatally shot on the Mohawk-Hudson bike path in Cohoes, New York, on the evening of November 16, 2018. A junior at Albany High School and a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, he had moved to the Capital Region with his family after living in Massachusetts. His mother described him as friendly, smart, and proud of his good grades.
Within days authorities arrested 22-year-old Thomas Slivienski of Watervliet and charged him with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors said Slivienski and the victim knew each other and alleged the shooting was revenge after two prior robberies of Slivienski’s marijuana; they say Slivienski lured Johni to the bike path under the pretense of a drug deal and then shot him. An Albany County grand jury indicted Slivienski, he pleaded not guilty and was held without bail, and a jury convicted him in September 2019.
Did anyone who knew Johni or who was in the Cohoes area that night see anything that could help explain what happened?
