Inderly Instinfil, a 19-year-old Black male from Philmont, was fatally shot on the evening of June 17, 2018, during a confrontation inside a residence at 20 Fairview Avenue in Hudson, New York. He suffered a single gunshot wound to the neck, left the house, and took a taxi to Columbia Memorial Hospital, where he died. Investigators quickly identified and located a 27-year-old Hudson man believed to have fired the shot; that man was arrested at a Kingston motel and arraigned in Hudson City Court.
Prosecutors charged the accused with second-degree murder while the defense said he acted in self-defense after Instinfil armed himself with a tire iron and entered the house. A central dispute at trial concerned the bullet’s path — whether Instinfil was shot from behind, as the prosecution argued, or was facing the shooter, as the defense contended. The case went to a Columbia County jury in June 2019; jurors considered murder and the lesser included charge of second-degree manslaughter, replayed a 911 call during deliberations, and asked the judge to clarify the law on justification and self-defense.
The jury acquitted the accused of both murder and manslaughter, accepting that the shooting was legally justified as self-defense. No separate weapons charge was pursued following trial. Does anyone have information about Instinfil’s life or the events at Fairview Avenue that evening?
